JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (April 10, 2019) – The ETSU women’s tennis team played their final home match of the season on Wednesday afternoon, at the Dave Mullins Tennis Complex. The Bucs defeated UNCG 5-2 on senior day, improving their record to 11-9 and 6-0 in the conference. UNCG falls to 9-11 and 3-4 in the conference.
Yi Chi Ma (Kaohsiung, Taiwan) and Raquel Amaro (Caracas, Venezuela) put ETSU out in front with a 6-2 win at the No. 2 spot. UNCG was able to even things out with a 6-2 win at the No. 3 spot after Sophia Adams and Eugenia Camacho defeated Andrea Pascual-Larrinaga (Basauri, Spain) and Yunuen Elizarraras (Cuernavaca, Mexico). The No. 1 doubles duo of Laylo Bakhodirova (Tashkent, Uzbekistan) and Alejandra Morales (Santiago, Chile) would clinch the point for the Bucs with a 6-4 win.
In the middle of doubles and singles action, the ETSU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics honored ETSU women’s tennis lone senior Yi Chi Ma.
Ma had an impressive senior outing. She went undefeated on the day helping ETSU take a 2-0 advantage winning the first singles point of the match. She won 6-1, 6-2 over Emily Ory at the No. 6 spot. The Spartans got on the board after Erika Barquero defeated Morales 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 2 spot. Pascual-Larrinaga would help ETSU take a 3-1 advantage after her 6-3, 6-4 win at the No. 3 spot over Sophia Adams. In a long battle, Amaro clinched the match for the Bucs. She won 7-6 (2), 2-6, 6-3 over Brianna Gomez. UNCG would put one more point on the board after Nancy Bridges and Bakhodirova battled it out at the No. 1 spot. Bridges would come away with a 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (5) win. Elizarraras concluded play for the Bucs on a high note after defeating Eugenia Camacho 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 at the No. 5 spot.
ETSU will conclude the regular season this Saturday, April 13 at noon. It will be a battle of the unbeaten, as both ETSU and Furman are 6-0 in the conference and are both eager to capture the 2019 regular season title.
