GREENVILLE, S.C. (April 13, 2019) – In one of the most anticipated matches of the season, the ETSU women’s tennis team fell to #48 Furman 6-1, on Saturday afternoon at the Mickel Tennis Center. The Bucs conclude the regular season with an 11-10 overall record and a 6-1 mark in conference. Furman finishes the season with a 23-1 overall record and 7-0 in the conference.
Furman started the match off strong by taking the doubles point after winning all three matches. ETSU would get on the board with the help of freshman Raquel Amaro (Caracas, Venezuela) who defeated Madison Dillion 6-1, 6-0. Amaro would tie the match, but Furman would go ahead at the No. 3 spot after Andrea Pascual-Larrinaga (Basauri, Spain) fell to Julia Adams 7-5, 6-2. The Paladins took a 3-1 advantage after #73 Katarina Kozarov defeated Laylo Bakhodirova (Tashkent, Uzbekistan) 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 1 spot. Alejandra Morales (Santiago, Chile) won her first set, but Katty Weymouth came from behind to win 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 2 spot to clinch the match. Yi Chi Ma (Kaohsiung, Taiwan) felt to Georgie Walker 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 6 spot. Rounding out play for the Bucs would be Yunuen Elizarraras (Cuernavaca, Mexico) who didn’t go down without a fight. Furman’s Carol Kerman gave the Paladins their final point with a 7-6 (7-5) 7-6 (7-3) win over the Elizarraras.
ETSU will return to action next weekend in Macon, Ga. for the 2019 Southern Conference Tournament. The Bucs clinched the No. 2 spot and will play at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 18 against the No. 7 seed.
