ETSU readies for conference tournament

MACON, Ga. (April 17, 2019) – After claiming the No. 2 seed in the Southern Conference Tournament, the ETSU women’s tennis team will open the quarterfinal round on Thursday, April 18 in Macon, Ga. against No. 7 Western Carolina at 10:30 a.m.

About the Bucs

ETSU concluded the regular season last week with an 11-10 overall record and a 6-1 conference mark. The Bucs are the No. 2 seed for the fourth straight year.

The Bucs received six postseason awards, which was announced on Tuesday by the league offices. Freshman Laylo Bakhodirova (Tashkent, Uzbekistan) collected the most honors for the Bucs. She was named to the First Team in singles, the All-Freshman Team, and the Second Team in doubles when combined with Alejandra Morales (Santiago, Chile) at the No. 1 spot. Raquel Amaro (Caracas, Venezuela) was named to the Second Team in singles at the No. 4 spot and the All-Freshman Team. Lastly Andrea Pascual-Larrinaga (Basauri, Spain) was named to the Second Team in singles at the No. 3 spot.

Aside from postseason awards, Amaro and Pascual-Larrinaga lead the Bucs with the most wins in singles. Elizarraras and Morales each have ten wins on the season to help the Bucs to a 68-49 record in singles. In doubles action, ETSU is 27-29.

Previewing Western Carolina

The Catamounts finished the regular season with a 12-9 overall record and a 2-5 conference slate. Their conference wins came against Chattanooga and Samford.

Western Carolina earned four postseason awards, highlighted by Jordan Strickland who received the Sportsmanship Award. Strickland also earned a spot on the Second Team in singles at the No. 1 spot.  She was joined by teammate Jacy Smith at the No. 2 spot, who was also named to the All-Freshman Team. Strickland went 11-10 in singles and Smith finished the regular season with a 16-4 record.

As a team, Western Carolina holds a 64-61 record in singles and are 37-25 in doubles.

About the SoCon Tournament

The three-day tournament is being held in Macon, Ga. at the John Drew Smith Tennis Center. The semifinal rounds will begin Friday, April 19 at 8:30 a.m. and the championship match will be played Saturday, April 20 at 1:00 p.m.

If the Bucs were to win in the quarterfinals, they will play the winner of the No. 3 Wofford/ No. 6 Mercer match at 10:00 a.m. on Friday.
