MACON, Ga. (April 19, 2019) – After a dominating 5-0 win over Western Carolina in the first round, the ETSU women’s tennis team carried that momentum into the Southern Conference semifinals. ETSU earned a 4-1 victory over No. 3 Wofford on Friday afternoon at the John Drew Tennis Center.
ETSU and Wofford finally hit the courts after battling the rain and a thunderstorm, halting the match for at least six hours. The Terriers claimed the first two doubles matches to clinch the point. Curran Carver and Brittney Wilbur defeated Andrea Pascual-Larrinaga (Basauri, Spain) and Yunuen Elizarraras (Cuernavaca, Mexico) 6-3. The Terriers would clinch the point at the No. 1 spot with a 6-4 win by Jenna Vroman and Cassidy Hicks.
Freshman Raquel Amaro (Caracas, Venezuela) got the Bucs on the board with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Kay Kluska at the No. 4 spot. Fellow freshman Yunuen Elizarraras helped ETSU take their first lead of the match after she won 6-2, 6-1 over Brittney Wilbur at the No. 5 spot. Alejandra Morales (Santiago, Chile) continued ETSU’s success after she defeated Cassidy Hicks 7-5, 6-4. Andrea Pascual-Larrinaga clinched the match for the Bucs with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Lilie Steryous.
With today’s win, ETSU moves to 13-10, while Wofford finishes their season with a 13-8 overall record.
No. 1 Furman topped No. 5 Samford 4-0 to claim the second spot in the championship match. ETSU and Furman will meet for the championship for the third straight year. First serve is set for 1:00 p.m. at the John Drew Tennis Center tomorrow, April 20.
