MACON, Ga. (April 20, 2019) – After getting through the first two rounds of the Southern Conference Tournament in Macon, the ETSU women’s tennis team saw its run come to an end. ETSU was out-dueled by No. 1 Furman 4-2 on Saturday afternoon at the John Drew Tennis Center.
Carol Elizabeth Kerman and Georgie Walker were able to give the Paladins an advantage with a 6-4 win over Andrea Pascual-Larrinaga (Basauri, Spain) and Yunuen Elizarraras (Cuernavaca, Mexico) at the No. 1 spot. ETSU would soon even things out after Laylo Bakhodirova (Tashkent, Uzbekistan) and Alejandra Morales (Santiago, Chile) defeated #68 ranked Katarina Kozarov and Julia Adams 6-4 at the No. 1 spot. In a tight battle, Furman would come away with a 7-6 (7-4) win at the No. 2 spot to clinch the doubles point.
Furman took a 2-0 lead after #78 ranked Kozarov defeated Bakhodirova 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 1 spot. The Bucs were able fight back and tie the match at two apiece. Raquel Amaro (Caracas, Venezuela) won 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 over Madison Dillon at the No. 4 spot. Andrea Pascual-Larrinaga also won her match with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Julia Adams at the No. 3 spot. The Paladins went ahead 3-2 after Katty Weymouth defeated Morales 7-6, 7-5 at the No. 2 spot. Elizarraras battled to push a third set, but Kerman would clinch the title for Furman with a 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 win. Yi Chi Ma (Kaohsiung, Taiwan) took the first set, 6-2 over Georgie Walker at the No. 6 spot. Walker would win the second set 6-4, but the match would go unfished at the Paladins had already clinched.
With the loss, ETSU concludes their season with a 13-11 record, while Furman improves to 26-1 to win their third straight Southern Conference title.
