Strong Singles Play Leads Bucs to First Home Win of 2020

BRISTOL, TENN. (Feb. 7, 2020) — After securing the doubles point for the second time this season, the Bucs took their momentum into singles play as ETSU’s women’s tennis team took down the Georgia State Panthers 5-2 to open their 2020 home slate.

In doubles action, the Bucs worked quickly at the No. 2 and 3 spots with Raquel Amaro (Caracas, Venezuela) and Andrea Pascual-Larrinaga (Basauri, Spain) coming up with a 6-1 victory at number two doubles. The pair of Michelle de Haan (Drenthe, Netherlands) and Yunuen Elizarraras (Cuernavaca, Mexico) matched their teammates set score to secure the doubles point for the Blue and Gold.

In singles action, the Bucs clinched the victory with wins at the number four, two and three spots before suffering their first loss of the day. All in straight sets, Amaro, Alejandra Morales (Santiago, Chile) and Pascual-Larrinaga walked away with victories in singles action. Amaro blanked her opponent in the second set to walk away with a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 4 which marked the largest victory of the day.

The last point for the Bucs came in the last match of the day with Elizarraras taking down GSU’s Mara Pop 6-3, 6-1.

With the victory, ETSU moves to 2-2 this season as GSU falls to 1-3. The Bucs have short rest before continuing play at the Bristol Racquet Club on Sunday with a 9 a.m. match against the VCU Rams.
