BRISTOL, Tenn. (Feb. 9, 2020) — After a 5-2 win to begin their home slate on Friday, ETSU women’s tennis team was back in action on Sunday at the Bristol Racquet Club facing the VCU Rams. After falling in doubles play, the Bucs won three of the first four singles matches, but were unable to clinch the match, falling to the Rams 4-3.
In doubles action, the Bucs evened play up with a win at No. 3 courtesy of Michelle de Haan (Drenthe, Netherlands) and Maria Carvajal (Queretaro, Mexico) with a 6-2 win over their opponent. The Rams clinched the point with a 6-4 win at No. 2.
In singles play, the Bucs won battles at No. 2, 3 and 4 spots to move within one match of a victory. Raquel Amaro (Caracas, Venezuela) was the first Buc to victory with a 7-5, 6-1 victory at No. 4. Andrea Pascual-Larrinaga (Basauri, Spain) was the second member of the Blue and Gold to snag a win with consecutive 6-2 victories. At the No. 2 spot, Alejandra Morales (Santiago, Chile) worked her way from behind to get a 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (4) win to give the Bucs a 3-2 advantage.
The Rams came through at the five and six bouts. With both matches going into three sets, the Rams prevailed with a win at No. 5 to clinch the match.
With the loss, ETSU falls to 2-3 and VCU improves to 5-2.
The Bucs have a week off before hitting the road again as they head west for two matches at Middle Tennessee State. On Saturday, Feb. 15 the squad will face Cincinnati
