COLUMBIA, S.C. (Jan. 16, 2021) — The ETSU women’s tennis team kicked off their spring campaign against one of the top-15 teams in the nation for the second straight season. The Bucs fell to No. 14 South Carolina on the road on Saturday afternoon, 6-1.
In doubles play, South Carolina was able to gain the advantage with wins at all three doubles spots. At number one doubles, Alejandra Morales (Santiago, Chile) and Mayya Gorbunova (Moscow, Russia) were able to keep it close falling 4-6.
In singles play, freshman Emilia Alfaro (Azul, Argentina) logged the Bucs’ lone point of the match with a straight-set (6-4, 7-6) victory over her Gamecock foe.
Around the rest of singles action, the Bucs competed against ranked opponents in the top two bouts. Laylo Bakhodirova (Tashkent, Uzbekistan), at No. 1, fell in a tiebreak in the first set against #34 Mia Horvit and later lost the second stanza. At No. 2, Morales won the first frame, 6-3 before losing the next two sets vs the 93rd ranked player in the country. Like Morales, Andrea Pasucal-Larrinaga (Basauri, Spain) won the first set 7-6 but fell in the third set 6-4, losing her match.
In the other two singles battles, Maria Carvajal (Drenthe, Netherlands) and Yunuen Elizarraras (Cuernavaca, Mexico) both lost in straight sets.
