NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Feb. 7, 2021) — After two straight 6-1 victories, the ETSU Women’s Tennis team faced an uphill battle on Sunday afternoon visiting the 15th-ranked Vanderbilt Commodores. The Bucs put up a tough battle in doubles action, but Vanderbilt secured the point and swept the match, 7-0.
ETSU falls to 4-3 and Vanderbilt moves to 6-0 on the season.
At the top doubles match, Vanderbilt took the edge in doubles play with a 6-3 victory. At the No. 2 and 3 doubles battles, it was a tighter contest. At the No. 2 bout, Laylo Bahkodirova/Emilia Alfaro tied the match at four games apiece. Down 5-4, the Bucs’ duo got the game to deuce, but the Commodores won the next two points to secure the doubles point. At the final doubles bout, Andrea Pascual-Larrinaga/Maria Carvajal were down 5-4 and 6-5, but battled back to force a deciding tiebreak. ETSU’s duo fell 7-2 in the tiebreak.
The Commodores have been dominant in singles play all season long. Vanderbilt swept all six singles matches yesterday against Lipscomb and won four of six singles play in straight sets on Sunday. Pascual-Larrinaga won her first set 6-1, but fell in the third frame 7-6. Alfaro in the No. 4 slot sent the match to a super tiebreak but the Commodores’ Staff took the match.
Vanderbilt snapped ETSU’s four-match win streak. The Bucs are back on the road on Friday at VCU.
