HARRISONBURG, Va. (Feb. 14, 2021) — In a match that came down to the bottom two singles battles, ETSU Women’s Tennis was unable to complete the comeback against JMU on Saturday afternoon as the Bucs fell 4-2.
ETSU falls to 4-5 on the season and JMU improved to 2-0.
To begin the match in doubles play, ETSU’s No. 3 duo of Andrea Pascual-Larrinaga (Basauri, Spain) and Maria Carvajal (Queretaro, Mexico) recorded the first win of the afternoon in dominant fashion, 6-1. JMU won the doubles point with 6-3 wins at No. 1 and No. 2.
Pascual-Larrinaga continued her dominance into singles play grabbing the first point of the contest for ETSU with a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 3. Laylo Bakhodirova (Tashkent, Uzbekistan) gave the Bucs their first lead of the match with a three-set victory at the top spot. She dominated the first and third sets with 6-1 wins. She fell in the second, 4-6.
JMU won the second and fourth singles matches and it came down to No. 5 and 6. JMU won the first set of both, 6-2. Carvajal at No. 5 came back to win the second set 7-6 (4). Yunuen Elizarraras at No. 6 forced a tiebreak in the second but fell 7-4 in the break as JMU won the match.
The Blue and Gold are back in action on Thursday, Feb. 18 as they face Memphis in a neutral site match in Knoxville.
