TAMPA. Fla. (March 19, 2021) — The ETSU Women’s Tennis team concluded its non-conference slate on Friday afternoon with a 5-2 victory over the University of South Florida in Tampa, Fla.
The Blue and Gold won the doubles point for the third match of their last four with a win at No. 2 and No. 3. Marija Carvajal (Queretaro, Mexico) and Andrea Pascual-Larrinaga (Basauri, Spain) got started at No. 3 with a 6-3 victory followed by Emilia Alfaro (Azul, Argentina) and Laylo Bakhodirova’s (Tashkent, Uzbekistan) point clinching victory in a tiebreak at the second doubles match.
In singles action, Yunuen Elizarraras (Cuernavaca, Mexico) doubled ETSU’s lead with a straight set victory in the bottom of the lineup; it was the only straight set victory for the Bucs in the match. The Bulls got their first point at No. 2 singles in the only other straight set match.
Victories by Pascual-Larrinaga (5-7, 6-0, 6-1) at No. 3 and Alfaro (1-6, 6-2, 6-3) at No. 4 sealed the victory for ETSU. Carvajal rounded out the five ETSU wins, coming out ahead of the three-set battle at the fifth singles spot, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
With the win, ETSU improved to 7-8, while USF fell to 5-9.
