SPARTANBURG, S.C. (March 29, 2021) – The ETSU Women’s Tennis Team won its third consecutive Southern Conference match on Monday morning to move to 3-0 in league play. The Bucs took down Wofford in Spartanburg, 6-1. The match was scheduled to be played yesterday, but weather in the area delayed the match to Monday morning.
ETSU won the doubles point with three wins in doubles play. Andrea Pascual-Larrinaga (Basauri, Spain) and Maria Carvajal (Queretaro, Mexico) won their match at No. 3, 6-2 to open the morning contest. Alejandra Morales (Santiago, Chile) and Mayya Gorbunova (Moscow, Russia) clinched the point for the Blue and Gold with a 7-5 victory at the No. 1 doubles spot. In the final match, Laylo Bakhodirova (Tashkent, Uzbekistan) and Emilia Alfaro (Azul, Argentina) swept doubles play with a 7-5 win.
Bakhodirova brought her success into singles play with a quick 6-1, 6-2 victory at the top spot. Pascual-Larrinaga moved ETSU within one point of the match winning in straight sets (6-3, 6-1) at No. 3. Maria Carvajal (Queretaro, Mexico) clinched ETSU’s third SoCon win of the season at the No. 5 singles position, winning 6-1, 6-4.
Alfaro continued the straight set wins for ETSU with a 6-2, 6-3 victory from the third singles spot. Yunuen Elizarraras (Cuernavaca, Mexico) won her team-best sixth straight singles match this afternoon with a 6-2, 4-6, 10-4 win at No. 6.
Wofford’s lone singles win came at No. 2, a 6-7, 7-5, 10-8 three-set victory.
The Bucs improve to 9-8 this season and 3-0 in SoCon action. Wofford falls to 9-5 overall and 2-2 in league play.
