TEMPE, Ariz. (June 9, 2021) – The Oracle/ITA Division I women’s tennis regional rankings were released on Wednesday, and the ETSU Buccaneers received a pair of marks. As a team, the Blue and Gold were tied for sixth in the Ohio Valley Region, while sophomore Laylo Bakhodirova (Tashkent, Uzbekistan) was ranked No. 19, individually.
The Bucs, who totaled 13 wins this past season, finished second in the Southern Conference with a 6-1 mark. In the region, ETSU and Memphis were tied for sixth, while the Bucs finished ahead of Purdue (No. 8), Ball State (No. 9) and Austin Peay (No. 10). Tennessee, Kentucky, Vanderbilt, Louisville and Xavier were the top-five teams in the region in that order.
As a team, ETSU has finished in the top-two in the SoCon standings for a fifth straight season (2020 not included), while the Bucs made their sixth straight appearance in the SoCon Championship match. Head coach Ricky Rojas was named SoCon Coach of the Year, becoming the fourth coach in league history to receive the accolade on both the men’s and women’s side.
Individually, Bakhodirova earned her second first team all-SoCon honor as she won six of her seven matches in league play – all at the No. 1 singles position. Bakhodirova won five straight singles matches from March 26-April 7, with two of those coming in straight sets. Overall, Bakhodirova played all 23 matches at No. 1 singles this season where she won 11 and played three nationally ranked players. Her 11 wins were the third-most by a SoCon player at No. 1 singles. In doubles, Bakhodirova was a key contributor in the number two slot where she and Emilia Alfaro won 10 matches, including a 5-2 record in conference play.
