CINCINNATI, Ohio (Feb. 25, 2022) – The ETSU women’s tennis team built off their home weekend, downing Xavier 4-3 in Cincinnati.
Backs against the wall, Xavier built up a quick 3-0 lead after winning the doubles point and taking the first two singles matches. The Bucs stood strong as Daniela Rivera (Maturin, Venezuela) sealed the match with a 6-3 win in the No. 5 spot after being down 4-1 in the second set.
Xavier got the best of ETSU in the doubles portion of the team match, taking the No. 1 flight 6-3 and the No. 2 flight 6-1 before the third ever finished. Each doubles pair had won their last two matches against their respective opponents.
Fernanda Carvajal (Queretaro, Mexico) put the Bucs on the board with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Xavier’s Anna Roggenburk. Laylo Bakhodirova (Tashkent, Uzbekistan) was the next Buccaneer to follow with a 6-2, 7-6 (2) win at the No. 1 spot to make it 3-2, still in favor of Xavier. Bakhodirova defeated Kyle back in their match in 2019.
Yunuen Elizarraras (Cuernavaca, Mexico) tied the match at three with a 6-3, 6-4 win at her No. 6 spot. Xavier’s Anna Smith took the first set 6-3 against Rivera and looked in control while going up 4-1 in the second set. Rivera stood the test and battled back, taking the second set 7-5 and eventually sealing the match with a 6-3 win in the third set.
ETSU and Xavier have split the last two matches 4-3, with the Musketeers coming on top back in 2019.
