ETSU women’s tennis downs Wildcats in straight sets

BRISTOL, Tenn. (Feb. 11, 2023) – ETSU women’s tennis won its fourth straight match on Saturday, finishing a successful weekend in the Tri-Cities with a dominant 7-0 sweep of Davidson on Saturday at the Bristol Sportsplex in Bristol, Tenn.

The Bucs improve to 6-3 overall and 2-0 at home this season, including a 26-4 home record over the last five seasons. Davidson falls to 1-4 on the campaign. ETSU is 4-0 against Davidson since 2010 with a combined score of 26-2 in that span.

All six singles matches finished in straight sets for ETSU.

ETSU won the doubles point with comfortable wins in the top two flights, including a 6-0 sweep by top pair Laylo Bakhodirova (Tashkent, Uzbekistan) and Mariya Shumeika (Minsk, Belarus) over Emma Heiderscheit and Franny Shea.

Maria Fernanda Carvajal (Queretaro, Mexico) and Daniela Rivera (Maturin, Venezuela) clinched the doubles point shortly after, winning 6-2 at No. 2 doubles over Josie Schaffer and Savanna Kollock. No. 3 doubles went unfinished.

The action then spilled over into singles with the top four flights starting things off. ETSU coasted to victory after winning three quick singles matches, starting with a win by Rivera at No. 4 singles over Daniela Porges (6-2, 6-2). Carvajal won 6-3, 6-4 in No. 3 singles after that to defeat Kavya Patel, then Bakhodirova clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Schaffer in the top flight.

The match concluded with straight set wins at the No. 5 and No. 6 spots from Ralitsa Alexandrova (Sofia, Bulgaria) and Yunuen Elizarraras (Cuernavaca, Mexico). The former won 6-0, 6-4 over Kollock and the latter picked up a 6-3, 6-4 win over Shea.

Bakhodirova and Rivera both ride five match win streaks in singles, while the four others are all on three match win streaks. As a team, Carvajal and Rivera are on a five match win streak, while the top pair of Shumeika and Bakhodirova have won four in a row and are 6-1 overall.

The Blue and Gold return to action next Saturday on the road as they head to Richmond to face VCU.
