ETSU graduate student selected as one of 18 national honorees

GREENWOOD, Ind. (June 1, 2023) – ETSU women’s tennis continues to celebrate its excellence in the classroom and on the court this season, as graduate student Emilia Alfaro (Azul, Argentina) was tabbed a College Sports Communicators (CSC) Second Team Academic All-American on Thursday.

On May 10, CSC announced its Women’s Tennis Academic All-District honorees with Alfaro, Laylo Bakhodirova (Tashkent, Uzbekistan), Mariya Shumeika (Minsk, Belarus) and Yunuen Elizarraras (Cuernavaca, Mexico) earning a spot on the list.

After the all-district teams were selected, 18 Academic All-Americans were voted from that list by the CSC membership — six first team selections, six second team selections and six third team selections. Alfaro was one of the 18 selected out of 522 eligible Academic All-District honorees.

Alfaro was one of two graduate students to earn All-America status and one of nine selected with a 4.00 GPA. The Argentinian graduated from ETSU with a degree in applied data science.

Alfaro was a member of ETSU’s 2023 Southern Conference Championship team that finished with a 19-8 overall record. The Bucs won the 2023 SoCon Championship with a 4-0 win over defending champion Furman, advancing to its first NCAA Championship tournament since 2016. The Bucs battled Vanderbilt in the Columbus Regional, falling in the first round.

A three-year member of the program, Alfaro finished with an 8-7 record in singles this season, including a 6-4 record in the No. 4 spot, as well as six doubles wins as a graduate student. After spending her first two seasons at Louisiana-Monroe, Alfaro finished with 44 career singles wins.

In the classroom, Alfaro and her team compiled an impressive 3.929 GPA to lead all ETSU programs this semester. She was also one of 40 to have a perfect 4.0 at ETSU in the spring semester.
