Buccaneer women earn 16 team points to place 11th

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (Feb. 13, 2015) – In open invite competition on Friday at the Birmingham Crossplex, the ETSU women totaled 16 points behind strong sprints/hurdles and pole vault performances to place 11th overall in the team rankings in the meet hosted by Samford University.

Senior hurdler Dede Edgecombe (Spartanburg, S.C.) continued to be a force in the women’s 60-meter hurdles with yet another top-three event finish. After not competing last weekend at the 2015 Buccaneer Invitational, Edgecombe continued her progression in the event this Friday with a third-place time of 8.56 in the event prelims and a runner-up placement in the finals with an 8.58 time. As a result, the ETSU women’s team was awarded eight points.

Junior sprinter Keturah Williams (Alpharetta, Ga.), too, continued her momentum in her sprints events with another solid showing. In the women’s 200-meter dash, Williams entered competition with a seeded time of 24.39 and went on to place seventh overall – out of 45 runners – with a time of 24.69. This placement allowed the junior to earn two team points.

In the women’s pole vault, sophomore Ashley Kessler (Knoxville, Tenn.) again tied the school record. With a jump of 3.80 meters, the sophomore has tied the ETSU women’s indoor record on multiple occasions this season. This mark was good for third overall in the event and earned six team points.

In total, the ETSU women scored 16 team points to place 11th out of 14 squads in 14 events scored.

The ETSU women will next compete at the Southern Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships on Feb. 27 and 28 inside the Birmingham Crossplex.
