Senior breaks own school record, sets new SoCon best in 60mH

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (Feb. 27, 2015) – On day one of the 2015 Southern Conference Indoor Track & Field Championship inside the Birmingham CrossPlex, the ETSU women’s track & field team totaled three top-three finishes in event finals, qualified seven in preliminary action, and saw senior hurdler Dede Edgecombe (Spartanburg, S.C.) take down a pair of records.

In the women’s 60-meter hurdle prelims, Edgecombe continued her stellar indoor season with an ETSU and SoCon record 8.31 time in the event to place first. The senior broke her own ETSU record of 8.39 that she set last season and surpassed the previous conference-best time of 8.48. The event final will take place tomorrow at 12:30 p.m.

Edgecombe also qualified for two other event finals, along with a handful of her teammates. In the women’s 60-meter dash, junior Keturah Williams (Alpharetta, Ga.) placed runner-up with a time of 7.67 and was trailed by Edgecombe in third with a 7.68 time. A trio of Buccaneers recorded qualifying times in the 200-meter dash prelims with Williams again taking second with a time of 24.83 and Edgecombe again following in third with a 25.35 time while freshman Marabeth Clark (Maryville, Tenn.) rounded out the top-eight qualifiers with a sprint of 25.84.

In addition, sophomore Carolyn Hinch (Knoxville, Tenn.) qualified in the women’s 800 meter with a personal-best 2:16.82 time.

In event finals, the ETSU squad of Victoria Hutchens (Stuart, Va.), Nicki Smith (Urbandale, Iowa), Hinch, and Katie Hirko (Oley, Pa.) turned in a third-place finish in the women’s distance medley relay with a 12:12.28 time, while freshman Timia Easley (Columbus, Ohio) took runner-up in the women’s long jump with a mark of 5.69 meters.

Additionally, senior Nicole Alexander (Rock Hill, S.C.) placed second in the women’s indoor pentathlon with a score of 3352. Alexander recorded a first-place mark in the 60mH with a time of 9.03 and posted a third-place standing in the long jump with a 5.18-meters mark.

After Friday’s action, ETSU is fourth in the team standings through six scored events.
