Maduwa, Parrilla and Guzman set PRs in Raleigh

RALEIGH, N.C. (March 27, 2021) – In the final day at the Raleigh Relays, a trio of Buccaneers set personal bests in the 800m on Saturday from the Paul Derr Track and Field Facility.

With only five ETSU track and field athletes competing on the third and final day, Phelani Maduwa (Parys, Free State, South Africa), Miguel Parrilla (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Evan Guzman (Franklin, Tenn.) all ran their fastest collegiate times in the 800m. Maduwa led the trio as he clocked in at 1:50.70, while Parrilla crossed the line in 1:51.79 and Guzman finished in 1:53.83. Finley McLear of Miami (Ohio) set a meet record in the 800m with a time of 1:47.43.

In the women’s 800m, Jessica Lord (Morristown, Tenn.) – who ran in the 400m on Friday evening – finished with a time of 2:14 on Saturday. Virginia’s Michaela Meyer won the 800m in a time of 2:02.20, setting both meet and facility records.

A week after breaking the school record in the hammer throw, senior Margaret Hayden (Ballymore Eustace, Kildare, Ireland) placed 18th in the event with a toss of 49.74m. Like in the women’s 800m, both the meet and facility records were set in the hammer as Laura Igaune – competing unattached – had a heave of 69.74m.

The Bucs will split the teams up next week with some going to High Point for the VertKlasse Invitational and others will go to Birmingham for the UAB Spring Invite. The VertKlasse meet will be held Thursday and Friday, while the UAB Spring Invite gets underway on Friday.
