ETSU track and field to compete in Raleigh Relays

RALEIGH, N.C. (March 22, 2023) – The Buccaneers are back in the Tar Heel state.

After opening the outdoor season last weekend in Charlotte, the ETSU men’s and women’s track and field teams are back in North Carolina as the Buccaneers compete in the Raleigh Relays, which will be held March 23-25 at the Paul Derr Track & Field Facility.

Time: The first Buccaneer athletes will be in action Thursday at 4:30 p.m. with the men’s 1500m

On Friday, the first ETSU athlete is competing at 9:45 a.m. in women’s discus

The first group of Bucs begin Saturday’s final day of competition in the women’s 800m starting at 1:45 p.m.

ABOUT THE BUCS

ETSU is slated to bring 13 Bucs to Raleigh this weekend (seven women, six men)

Fresh off a pair of wins last week in Charlotte, Genevieve Schwarz (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) will be competing this weekend in both the 800m and 1500m … For the third straight year, Schwarz won the 1500m at the 49er Classic, while she defended her crown in the 800m on Saturday

Schwarz is one of four Bucs to run the 800m this weekend as she will be joined by Hannah Burkhart (Knoxville, Tenn.), Rebekah Howard (Ashland, Ky.) and Jessica Lord (Morristown, Tenn.) … Joining Schwarz in the 1500m will also be Howard … The 1500m begins Friday at 4:20 p.m., while the 800m will be held Saturday at 1:45 p.m.

The first Bucs in action this weekend will be Phelani Maduwa (Parys, Free State, South Africa) as he runs the 1500m Thursday at 4:30 p.m. … Maduwa will also be showcased in the 800m along with Miguel Parrilla (Knoxville, Tenn.) … The men’s 800m will be contested Saturday at 4:20 p.m.

A pair of Bucs will be competing in field events this weekend as Mary Brown (Radford, Va.) is in the discus and hammer, while Malachi Thomas (Chilhowie, Va.) competes in the high jump … The discus gets underway Friday at 9:45 a.m. and the hammer is scheduled for Saturday at 1:15 p.m. … Thomas competes in the high jump Friday at 11 a.m.

Joining Maduwa in competition on Thursday will be Myles Stoots (Mobile, Ala.) and Brayden Hamblen (Rock Falls, Ill.) in the steeplechase starting at 5:33 p.m. … Evan Guzman (Franklin, Tenn.) rounds out Thursday’s events in the 5000m starting at 6:33 p.m.  

Also, on the track this weekend includes Kiera Snyder (Clyde, Mich.) and Chanelle Kruger (Johannesburg, South Africa) … The Buccaneer duo will be competing Friday with Kruger in the steeplechase at 5:40 p.m. and Snyder in the 5000m at 6:25 p.m.

UP NEXT

ETSU is back in action next weekend when the Bucs head back to North Carolina as the Blue & Gold compete in the VertKlasse Meeting, held at High Point University from March 31-April 1.
