RALEIGH, N.C. (March 24, 2023) – It didn’t take Chanelle Kruger (Johannesburg, South Africa) long to put her name in the Buccaneer record book as an individual.
Making her collegiate debut in the steeplechase, Kruger broke the ETSU record on Friday night at the Raleigh Relays. Kruger registered a time of 10:35.01 in the event en route to finishing 14th overall in the steeplechase. The previous school record of 10:57.16 was set nearly 10 years ago at the Raleigh Relays by Chelsea Clark.
Kruger was already in the Buccaneer record book when she and three other Bucs set the program record in the women’s distance medley relay with a time of 11:40.82 back on Feb. 4 at the South Carolina Invitational.
Staying on the track, Jessica Lord (Morristown, Tenn.) set a personal best in the 400m with a time of 56.18. Lord finished second in her section and 31st overall in a field of 82 runners who finished the race.
On the men’s side, Miguel Parrilla (Knoxville, Tenn.) posted a season-best in the 400m as he posted a time of 50.61.
Earlier in the day in the field events, Mary Brown (Radford, Va.) and Malachi Thomas (Chilhowie, Va.) had strong showings in the discus and high jump.
Brown set a personal best mark in the discus with a distance of 42.05m, resulting in a 25th-place finish among a field of 49 competitors. Thomas, competing in the high jump, cleared 2.01m for a fifth-place showing. Thomas’ mark set an outdoor personal best.
Rounding out the night was Kiera Snyder (Clyde, Mich.) in the 5000m. Snyder set a personal best by turning in a time of 16:53.02, shaving 13 seconds off her previous top time of 17:06.28, set last month at the Southern Conference Indoor Championships. Snyder’s previous outdoor personal best in the 5000m was 17:27.23, set last May at the Lee University Last Chance. Snyder finished second in her section and was 74th overall in the field of 170 runners.
Saturday marks the final day of the Raleigh Relays. The first Buccaneer to compete will by Mary Brown in the hammer beginning at 1:15 p.m.
