BOONE, N.C. (Sept. 16, 2021) – In ETSU triathlon’s first cross-country event in program history, the squad went to the Firetower Project 5k hosted by Appalachian State Cross Country and finished seventh as a team. Other programs in attendance were Elon (who finished first as a team), College of Charleston, UNC-Asheville, Montreat College, UNC-Wilmington, USC-Upstate, Lees-McRae, and the host Mountaineers.
Freshman Izi Belogay (Sterling, Va.) led the Bucs with a time of 18:17.99, good for 20th in a field of 101. Behind her was senior Lane McDonald (South Bend, Ind.) with a time of 19:06.71. Freshman Sarah Plant (Chandler, Ariz.) rounded out the top-3 ETSU finishers with a 19:38.23 finish.
“The girls did a great job today,” Head Coach Allie Nicosia said. “The point of this race was to work on some race tactics and mostly get some extra competition in. I’m really proud of them and excited to see where they will be in a month at the next triathlon!”
Up Next: The Buccaneer triathlon team will take the next month to prepare for the central regional qualifier in Huddleston, Va. That race is scheduled for Oct. 16th.
